If crops are monocultured (example if soybeans are grown year-after-year in the same field) then both the crop yields and soil health suffer.  It is very important to rotate crops so that disease and insect pressure doesn\u2019t build up in the soil and resistance does not occur.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bodyContentSectionRow2\">\n<div class=\"bodyContentSectionRow2Col1\">\n<h2>Corn<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barlowfarms.ca\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/corn_img.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barlowfarms.ca\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/corn_img.jpg\" alt=\"corn_img\" width=\"220\" height=\"138\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>                We grow field corn, unlike the sweet corn you buy at your local supermarket.  Most of our corn is sold to local feed mills (that grind the corn into livestock feed), export markets, ethanol plants, and corn sweetener manufacturers.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"bodyContentSectionRow2Col2\">\n<h2>Soybeans<br \/>\n                <\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.barlowfarms.ca\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/soybean.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barlowfarms.ca\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/soybean.jpg\" alt=\"soybean\" width=\"220\" height=\"138\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>               We grow both Roundup Ready soybeans and conventional Food Grade soybeans on the farm.  The conventional food grade soybeans are typically sold into the export market and often end up in Japan or somewhere else in south east Asia.  The Roundup Ready soybeans almost entirely go to a local soybean crushing plant in Hamilton where they are processed into soybean oil and soybean meal.\n               <\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"bodyContentSectionRow2Col3\">\n<h2>Wheat<\/h2>\n<p>\n               <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barlowfarms.ca\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/wheat_img.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barlowfarms.ca\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/wheat_img.jpg\" alt=\"wheat_img\" width=\"220\" height=\"138\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>               We primarily grow Canadian Eastern Soft Red Winter wheat.  All of our wheat is grown to milling quality so it goes to local flour mills and also for export through ports in Hamilton and Port Colborne.\n             <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"hr\"><\/div>\n<h1>Cover Crops<\/h1>\n<div class=\"bodyContentSection\" style=\"padding: 0px 0px 10px !important;\">\n           We grow some other crops like red clover but these are used as \u201cgreen manure\u201d and for nutrient cycling.  These crops are grown to improve the health and structure of the soil and stop soil degradation.
